The purpose of Functional Skills Mathematics qualifications is to help you be able to demonstrate a sound grasp of the underpinning skills and basics of mathematical skills appropriate to the level, and the ability to apply mathematical thinking to solve problems in familiar situations. A recognised qualification in Maths is a requirement in forthcoming jobs.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. You will be assessed on your ability and placed to study a Functional Skills qualification at the level that is suitable for you after an initial assessment with an individual learning plan (ILP).

  • Entry Level 1, 2, 3 and Level 1 and 2
  • Entry Level 1- Understand the use of numbers with one significant figure.
  • Entry Level 2- Understand and use whole numbers.
  • Entry Level 3- Understand the use of fractions and solve multiply equations with everyday life.
  • Level 1- Understand negative numbers in practical context with percentages and decimals.
  • Level 2- recognise the uses of 2D and 3D shapes/objects and how to use area, perimeter and volume of common shapes.

Where can I progress onto next?

After completing entry level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications, you can progress onto the next level of Maths. You could also apply for a job in your field of choice.

After completing level 1 and 2 qualification, with this you can apply for a job in your field of choice or progress onto a college for a degree.

The Functional Skills in Mathematics qualifications at Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3 are free of charge as they are funded by the Government.
